Communication Series - James 1:19-20
Phil Payne
Better Communication = Stronger Relationships
My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, because human anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires. James 1:19-20
“Sticks and Stones will break your bones, but words will never hurt me”
Proverbs 11:9 “Evil words destroy one’s friends.
Proverbs 15:4 “; a deceitful tongue crushes the spirit.”
Proverbs 25:18 “Telling lies about others is as harmful as hitting them with an ax, wounding them with a sword, or shooting them with a sharp arrow.”
Listening vs Doing.
James 3:2-11
Controlling our Tongue
- Bit in a horse’s mouth
- Rudder on a ship
- Spark
It is not a tongue issue – Jesus said it is a heart issue. Luke 6:45 The heart controls the tongue.
If you want your heart to control your tongue:
1. Surrender your heart to Christ - Ezekiel 36:26
2. Submit your heart to God’s Word - Hebrews 4:12
3. Be quick to listen - James 1:19-20
Questions to consider this week:
Do the words that come out of your mouth consistently reflect that you belong to Christ?
Are you putting into practice what you are learning from this series?
What difference would it make this week if your heart controlled your tongue?
What is one area that Jesus is inviting you to trust Him more this week?
