Series:  #2. Rooted and Resilient: Living a vibrant, winsome, and non-anxious presence in a troubled world.

Introduction

Why are you here today?  I’d genuinely like and answer… and maybe an answer with two parts…

  • Why are you at church?
  • Why are you at THIS church?

How can your orient your life and spaces to draw you into friendship with Jesus?

Jesus is not ONLY our friend… but he is our friend none the less.

What do we know about the nature and person of Jesus?  How does he refer to himself?

In John Chapter 15 HE is the one who says… “I call you friends!”

Jesus teaches us a bit about friendship in John 15.

What do we learn that friendship looks like in John 15?

Friendship with Jesus looks like Abiding.

What does it mean to Abide?

Breakdown of Abiding:

Questions for Reflection:

  1. Spend some time with the Icon of Christ and Abba Menas.  What do you see in the art?  What are you drawn to?
  2. Does thinking of Jesus as a friend bother you? If so why?
  3. What are the most helpful ways that you engage with Christ routinely?
  4. What do you notice in your personal friendships that you could bring into your relationship with Jesus?

Project for the coming Week:

  1. Spend time in reflection on John 15:1-17. Read it daily.  Write it out at least once.  Read it aloud each day.
  2. What do you notice about it?
  3. What are the longings that it inspires in you?
